The 2024 Summer International Multi-Sport Event, the Paris
Olympics, took place from 26th July to 11th August. The
event showcased a rich history and aimed to set new standards of unity and
achievement worldwide. The opening ceremony was marked by the ‘Parade of
Athletes’.
India’s participation in these Olympics had its share of ups
and downs. Manu Bhaker, an air pistol shooter, set an exemplary standard by
winning two consecutive bronze medals. She was also honoured as the Indian
flagbearer for the closing ceremony in Paris. The spirit of the Olympics was
embodied by Lakshya Sen, who became the first Indian male badminton player to
reach the semi-finals and was in contention for three medals (chin up, hero).
The Indian men’s hockey team delivered a remarkable performance, securing a
bronze medal against Spain.

A shocking turn of events occurred when Vinesh Phogat, the
Indian wrestler, announced her retirement after being disqualified from the
Paris Olympics for being 100 grams overweight on the morning of her final. She
remarked, “Kushti mere se jeet gayi,” marking a sad end to her career and a
loss for the Indian team. All eyes were on Neeraj Chopra, the Indian track and
field athlete, who displayed immense passion in the Men’s Javelin event and
secured a silver medal. Arshad Nadeem, representing Pakistan, set a new Olympic
record and won gold with his throw in the same category. This event also
witnessed an India-Pakistan moment. While most would think of it as rivalry,
the moment was indeed heartwarming, setting the standards of unity and
sportsmanship.

Additionally, these Olympics featured many athletes whose
presence brought glory to the event. Mary Hanna, a 69-year-old Australian
equestrian, participated and proved that age should not be a barrier to
pursuing one’s passion. Yaylagul Ramazanova, a seven-month pregnant archer,
demonstrated extraordinary skill, balancing her athleticism with impending
motherhood, serving as an inspiration to many. Another standout figure, Dikec
Yusuf, won silver in the air pistol shooting event, and his unorthodox approach
throughout the competition was highly regarded.

record-breaking moments to emotional farewells, this season will be noted in
