Taali: A Deserving Story Of Pride And Rights

Based on the Life of Trans campaigns, Shreegauri Sawant, Taali measures her journey from birth as a boy in a middle-class family to finally accepting her calling and setting out on a journey full of struggles and battles. Directed by Ravi Jadhav. Starring: Sushmita Sen, Ankur Bhatia, Aishwarya Narkar, and Hemangi Kavi, the series is available on the OTT platform Jio Cinema.

The director looks at trans people with a compassionate look where they can be the conqueror of their stories, not sufferers, terrifying villains, or victims.

But while we welcome the process in storytelling and look at everyone as humans, does the 'Them and Us' dilemma dissolve with every project?

The storyline

The Web series starts with Ganesh in a classroom, when his teacher educates the students on a career aptitude examination. When Ganesh was asked about his aim in Life, he said with a smile that he dreams of becoming a mother one day.

The moment the teacher and other students hear that, they all start laughing, and Ganesh is told he can not become a mother as he is a boy. Being a teacher, one could have handled it in a better way, but here we see the opposite, so how can we expect society to accept them usually? But the worst part was that Ganesh was not understood by his own family.

There is a point comes where the emotional part of Ganesh's sex reassignment operation, becoming Gauri and spreading alertness about transgender rights, which finally leads her to file a petition in the Supreme Court of India to identify the third gender as an Indian citizen and give them a fair request, which would allow their inclusion on every authorized document in India. Coming out of the house without family's support and creating the Life Gauri has always wanted is not easy at such an age.

A Star Performance

However, in an interview, Sushmita Sen said, One can not put everyone in a box and say everyone behaves the same, talks the same, and lives the same. Every human being is different. We can see how time changed for her; her struggles and sacrifices everything paid off. Gauri is too motherly, as the below dialogue goes along with her.

"Yeh, kahaani mere jaise kayi logon ki hain kyunki yeh Gauri bhi kabhi ganesh thi" The primary purpose of this story was to spread this message among all the trans people who are scared to reveal who they are.

For me, the series is about the absolute freedom every human being wants. It is high time to accept every human being as they are. We always talk about rights to Life, liberty, and freedom of speech, but when it comes to a specific portion of our society, we always take a back step.

There is a shot where we see, even after opening education classes, few people who were not eager to be educated. However, Gauri wanted all of them to be educated and not apply other wrong roads for themselves. They are happy to beg and earn.

Today, Gauri owns her foundations, educates people, and cares for abandoned children.

The Director showed what changes she made in our society, as well as for her community. The writer wanted to spread a strong message through hard-hitting dialogues such as 'Maa ban na koi Gender nahi feeling hai' (Being a mother is not a gender, but a feeling). The emotional ending taught a life lesson to everyone that says, Tu Muskil dede bhagwan, mein Asan karu, Tu dede tapti ret, mein Gulistan Karu…(God, give me your hardest battles, and I'll fight fiercely. Give me  )

Overall, Taali is a strong, bold, encouraging tale of equality of the Trans Gender in our Country. The story is full of emotional scenes and struggles of Gauri. Lastly, Sushmita Sen, the bold actress, carried the series on her shoulder with her aura. She was magnificent as Gauri. Her beard pores were inspiring, which was never seen on the screen before; her voice was solid. Apart from Sushmita Sen, no one could have done justice to this role.
