40 year old woman raped and trafficked by two men in Assam
A 40 year old woman was
raped and tortured by two men from Assam, who are currently under police
custody. The woman was allegedly trafficked from Naharlagun in Andhra Pradesh
by the two accused on October 7. According to the statements of the victim, the
woman used to work as a domestic help in Naharlagun, where she was tortured and
raped, and then forcibly abducted.
The accused Abhiram
Tasang (46) and Amar Sonar (47) are from Chariduar in Sonitpur District, and
have been arrested by the police on October 15th.
The victim managed to
escape her captors and is currently under the protection of the Assam Police.
Eksay studio's godown devoured in flame

Early on Thursday
morning, a major fire broke out and severely damaged the Eskay Studio’s godown
on Baburam Ghosh Road in Kudghat, destroying almost everything stored there;
including film rolls, cameras, lights and props. According to the statements
issued by the Police, the three and a half hour inferno led to losses worth
crores, even though no one was injured.
Due to the presence of
a highly populated slum in the vicinity of the fire, the situation was
extremely critical. The fire was thankfully extinguished before it started to
spread, before the scale of destruction turned disastrous. The cause of the
fire, though, is still unknown.
Hazards in Bowbazar: Compesation and Subsidence
Chief Minister Mamata
Banerjee questioned Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation (KMRCL) on October 15th
regarding the subsidence and consequent cracks in the Bowbazar residential
buildings, which are caused by the metro construction work.
It has been announced that for the subsequent three years after the construction of the Metro rails, KMCRL shall keep supervision and maintain the structure. Further, a compensation of 5 lakh will be provided to the affected families. Rs. 1.5 lakhs will be paid for the land up to 100 sq. ft., and Rs. 5 lakhs for above 100 sq. ft. of area.
Mandatory use of sound limiters in open areas: WBPCB
The West Bengal
Pollution Control Board (WBPCP) issued an order directing all the users of
microphones/audio systems within the state, to use sound limiters when using
such devices in open areas to avoid penal action.
The Pollution Control
Board said that this order was issued in exercise of the powers conferred under
the Environmental Protection Act of 1986 along with the Noise Regulation and
Control Rules 2000.
The order was signed by Dr Rajesh Kumar, member secretary, WBPCP.
SSC SCAM: ED raids offices of coaching institutes
With the ED’s
ongoing probe on the multi crore School Service Commission (WBSSC) recruitment
scam, the next organisation to be to raided was a coaching institute. On
Saturday, multiple raids were conducted in different offices of Minerva
Educational and Welfare Society. The ED also raided the housing of Tapas Kumar
Mondal, who is the owner of the institute. Mr. Mondal also happens to be a
close aide of TMC legislator Manik Bhattacharya.
