Kerala reports India’s first confirmed monkey pox case
On July 14, India confirmed its 1st monkey pox case from Kerala after the sample of the UAE return person was tested positive at National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune.
The positive person was a 35-year-old man who returned from United Arab Emirates (UAE) a few days ago and was admitted to Thiruvananthapuram Medical College. Earlier in the day, Veena George, Health Minister of Kerala, had said that the monkey pox patient was in close contact with the positive patient abroad.

Punjabi pop singer Daler Mehndi sentenced to 2 year jail in Human Trafficking Case
The Patiala district Court on Thursday sentenced Daler Mehndi who is a popular Punjabi singer to 2 years jail with reference to the 2003 human trafficking case. Along with the imprisonment sentence, the trial court has imposed on him a fine of Rs.2000.
Mehndi has been held guilty under Section 420 (cheating) and 120B (conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). This decision by the lower Court was upheld by the additional district and session judge, HS Grewal who dismissed Mehndi’s appeal against conviction. Daler is most likely to be taken to the same jail where Navjot Singh Sidhu is lodged.

The New National Emblem atop Parliament building sparks controversy
On July 11, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the national emblem atop the new Parliament building. However, it soon landed up in a major controversy after the opposition parties alleged that the lions look different in comparison to the original.
The viral photos of the lions in the emblem atop the Parliament building with bare fangs, shows the lions as aggressive compared to the original lions in the Ashoka Stambh which shows mild expressions. The Congress party calls out the angry lions as man-eaters and an insult to India’s National Emblem.
India ranks 135 among 146 countries: Global Gender Gap index 2022
World Economic forum released the Global Gender Gap Report 2022 where India ranks the worst performer in ‘health and survival’. It is positioned 135th among 146 countries in the world.
India lags behind its neighboring countries- Bangladesh (71), Sri Lanka (110), Nepal (96), Maldives (117) and Bhutan (126). However, Iran (143), Pakistan (145) and Afghanistan (146) still remains worse than India in South Asia. Back in 2021, India was positioned 140 out of 156 nations. India’s ranking has been as such in 2022- health and survival (146), economic participation and opportunity (143), educational attainment (107) and political empowerment (48).
