The show was globally released on 17 September 2021, and has gained over 111m views worldwide making it Netflix’s most popular series ever. However, what is it about the show that has captured audience from all across the world breaking record after record?

One reason why Squid Game has become so popular among audience worldwide is because of its simple and creative storyline. It took quite a humble concept and turned it into a comprehensive reflection of the society. The show revolves around 456 people fraught with debt in Seoul. They are recruited by a bunch of mysterious masked men to play a series of deadly competitions based on Korean children’s games. The ultimate winner will receive 45.6 billion won (USD 38 million) but those who failed are mercilessly eliminated.
People might have found the show fascinating because it accurately depicts the real-life scenario. Viewers living through the pandemic could relate easily to characters whose life is at stake. In 2020, many of us have lost near and dear ones coupled with unprecedent apprehension about life and death. This situation of being on edge on multiple levels will make the audience relate to all the characters of the Korean drama.
The show is based on simple childhood games, but with some deadly twists. The spontaneous violence and some really nerve-racking ordeal will make the audience hook on the show.
