Fresh cases of COVID 19 shoot up, post puja celebration
Fresh Covid-19 cases were reported in West Bengal over the last five days, with an increase in the positivity rate, experts blaming it on rapidly increasing violations of Covid-19 containment norms during the Durga puja celebrations earlier this month. On October 16, there were 443 new Covid cases reported, but that number nearly doubled over the next five days, reaching 867 new cases on October 20. On October 15, the puja came to an end. Similarly, the rate of positive cases increased from 1.6 per cent on August 20 to 1.9 per cent on September 20 and 2.4 per cent on October 20.
Jadavpur University top Indian universities on Stanford list
Based on the career-long research of top scientists, Jadavpur University has topped the list of Indian Universities in Stanford University's database of top scientists.
Twenty-nine Jadavpur University scientists in Kolkata have been included in a database maintained by Stanford University that rates the top 2% of scientists globally based on research publications.
According to a representative of the Jadavpur University Teachers Association, the number of scientists at JU is the greatest of any university in the country.
BJP candidate, MLA verbally harassed in Coochbehar, party accuses TMC
During campaigning in West Bengal's Coochbehar district on Tuesday, a BJP candidate for the upcoming assembly by-elections and a lawmaker were allegedly heckled by TMC supporters in the presence of a saffron party MP. The local TMC leadership, on the other hand, denied that party employees were involved in the event. During campaigning in Nayarhat, Ashok Mondal, the BJP candidate for the Dinhata assembly by-election, and Natabari's party MLA Mihir Goswami were heckled in the presence of Jalpaiguri's BJP MP Jayanta Roy.
As BJP representatives arrived in the region to campaign for the October 30 by-election, alleged TMC supporters yelled 'go back' cries. However, the police were able to bring the situation under control.
Diesel crossed Rs 100 mark in six Bengal districts
Diesel prices surpassed the Rs 100 per litre mark in at least six Bengal districts, causing alarm among farmers, businessmen, and tour operators who requested central action to cushion the shock.
In Cooch Behar, a litre of diesel currently costs Rs 100.08, Rs 100.17 in Alipurduar, Rs 100.29 in Darjeeling, Rs 100.14 in Purulia, Rs 100.16 in Nadia, and Rs 100.03 in Murshidabad.
Merlin Group announces the launch of A Mega Sports Township in Kolkata.
Merlin Group, a Calcutta-based realtor, announced the formal launch of RISE, a residential township in Rajarhat, aiming to add over 6 million square feet of built-up area to the city's environment over the next decade.
The 45-acre township will be built on the subject of sports and will have a population density of 35000 people in Rajarhat Chowmatha on the 6-lane expressway connecting New Town. The developer aims to construct football and cricket fields, as well as a swimming pool and an indoor sports arena for the occupants of the 10,000 living units that will be built there. This Greenfield Township Project, based on a theme, will create 7000 direct and 25000 indirect work opportunities.
