Top five animated movies to watch on Halloween

With Halloween knocking at the door next month, the spooky decorations and the pumpkin spice smell of the autumn has only marked the beginning of the overstretched celebration of the All Hallows eve; One such tradition of the celebrations are horror binge fests.

Horror binge-fests are generally mind-boggling and filled with gore and dark horror scares which might not be appropriate or audience-friendly for many. So, here are some family-friendly animated picks to add a dash of Halloween spirit.


The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)


One of Tim Burton’s creations, where he takes you to a land extraordinaire filled with magic; Where every holiday has its own special land. Revolves around the pumpkin king, Jack Skellington from Halloween town grown tired of the same routine of scare and scream, wandered into the Christmas town and gets impressed with the joy and jolly and longs to spread the merriment into his Halloween town but fails to do so when his plan gets awry due to his obsession with Christmas. It is the perfect blend of the two festivals and is a Halloween must-watch.


Corpse bride (2005)


Adapted from Jewish folklore, it is one of Tim Burton’s most acclaimed creations. It is about reluctant Victor who is nervous about his wedding and while practicing his lines and wedding vows in a forest with a skeleton whom he mistook for a dead tree branch gets whisked away to the underworld for he got married to the skeleton which belonged to the deceased Emily who was murdered. Watch Victor's journey through the underworld to get back to the land of the living in this whimsical stop motion animation.


Coraline (2009)


Adapted from Neil Gaiman’s book Coraline, it is a blend of David Cronenburg Style horror and twilight zone dark fantasy were an adventurous and courageous girl, Coraline while exploring her new home, stumbles upon a secret door with a secret passageway leading to an alternate world which is the better and idealised version of her frustrating home where soon she discovers some sinister secrets which pushes her to escape, where she must put to use all her bravery to make it back to her own family and life. Needless to say, one must not miss out on this strikingly dark cinematic fable for a Halloween binge-watch.


Hotel Transylvania (2012)


Now to lighten up the mood, hotel Transylvania with its Genius comedy duo Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg brings you a buoyant Monster comedy. Hotel Transylvania, a luxurious and ornate gothic high-end resort owned by Dracula, Prince of darkness, provides the monster class worldwide with a relaxing, extravagant and lavish human-free experience. For his daughters 118th birthday, Dracula invites his various monster mates but it all gets very convoluted when an uninvited guest, an ordinary human unknowingly crashes the party. It is a lively family-friendly monster duo to lighten up the gore and dark Halloween mood.


The Addams Family (2019)


This is the animated reboot of the classic, the Addams family. Revolves around the mysterious and eccentric Addams family who are looked upon indifferently by the people of the valley they live nearby for their eerie aura. While the family prepares for a family get together expecting their eerie relatives, creepier than them, shady TV personality, Margaux, Living in the valley sets on destroying the creepy hilltop mansion of the Addams family for her fame and realtor dream. It spreads a social message since it redefines the idea of a good neighbour through its contrasting blatant and colorful visualization of the classic Halloween comedy.
