India evacuates 200 people, including its Embassy from war-torn Kabul

Following the Taliban's takeover, India completely withdrew its embassy in Kabul, including the return of the Indian ambassador. Earlier on Tuesday (August 17), a special Indian Air Force plane carrying 130 diplomats and around 20 Indians trapped in Afghanistan touched down in Jamnagar, Gujarat. 

This includes the members of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police who defended the mission. 

Cooking gas LPG prices hiked by Rs 25 per cylinder

On August 18, the price of domestic cooking gas LPG was raised by ₹25 per cylinder, marking the second month in a row of increase in rates. According to an oil company pricing notification, subsidised LPG now costs ₹859 for a 14.2 kg cylinder in Delhi.

This is the second month in a row that prices have risen. On July 1, rates were raised by ₹25.50 per cylinder. The latest rise in the subsidised LPG price brings the total rate increases since January 1 to ₹165 per cylinder. 

Former UP CM Kalyan Singh passes away at 89 


Kalyan Singh, the former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and former governor of Rajasthan passed away at Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI) in Lucknow Saturday after suffering from sepsis and multiorgan failure.

The 89-year-old BJP veteran was taken to the hospital's ICU on the evening of July 4 owing to an infection and reduced consciousness level. CM Yogi Adityanath said three-day mourning will be declared in the state to condole his demise. 

Meghalaya govt orders judicial inquiry into the killing of ex-militant 



After a Cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Conard K Sangma said that his Cabinet has decided to constitute a judicial inquiry into Thangkhiew’s death. 

Thangkhiew, 57, was killed in “retaliatory firing” by police in the early hours of Friday morning, after officials said they had discovered “clear evidence” of his involvement in an IED bomb that injured two people in Shillong last week. According to the police, when they arrived to arrest him, Thangkhiew assaulted them with a knife in an attempt to flee, prompting the officers to fire a single round leading to his death. 

Supreme Court allows women to appear for NDA exams 



The Supreme Court, in an interim order issued on Wednesday, allowed women candidates to sit for the National Defence Academy (NDA) entrance exam scheduled for September 5, a year after its landmark decision granting permanent commission to women officers of the Indian Army serving under Short Service Commission. While delivering the judgement, the court slammed the Army for not allowing women to take the NDA exam. When the 

Army's lawyer argued that it was a policy choice, the Supreme Court upheld that it was based on "gender discrimination."
