‘Tragedy King’ of Bollywood – Dilip Kumar passes away at 98

Legendary actor of Bollywood, Dilip Kumar passed away on 7th July in presence of his wife Saira Banu. The man who ruled the industry for over five decades made his debut in 1944 in the movie – Jwar Bhata, which was produced by Bombay Talkies, and then Mohammed Yusuf Khan of Peshawar became one of the brightest stars of Bollywood – aka Dilip Kumar.Read on to know a few glimpses of his illustrious film career. 

 

As an actor he has explored nearly all possible genres in his lifetime. He had the magical charisma to play every character in perfection.

In 1952 released his two-best works – Daag and Aan. 

Daag” was an unusual love story portrayed beautifully during 50’s directed by Amiya Chakravarty.It was the fourth highest grossing Indian film of 1952. 

 

He was popularly called the “Tragedy King of Bollywood” for delivering intense performances in love stories AndazBaabulDeedar, and Jogan.

Gradually to justify his kingship, in 1955 under the direction of Bimal Roy, he played “DevdasThe tears, the grief, the pangs of losing love, is so masterly crafted by him that it became an iconic blockbuster for silver screen.

Then in 1960 released one of the most iconic films of the Indian film industry, “Mughal – E – Azam directed by K.Asif it also starred Prithiviraj Kapoor, Madhubala along with Dilip Kumar. The film was considered the best of its genre which broke all the box office records, and also won National Award as well as four Filmfare Awards.

In 1963, he also made his debut in Bengali Cinema with “Paari”. In the next year he was the lead in Tapan Sinha’s directorial film – “Sagina Mahato”.

In 1982 released the Dilip-Amitabh duo blockbuster – ‘Shakti directed by Ramesh Sippy with R.D Burman’s soulful music, Shakti won four Filmfare Awards, for Best Film, Best Screenplay, Best Sound Editing, and Best Actor for Dilip Kumar. 

In 1998, Dilip Kumar made his last appearance in the movie – “Qila”. 

In 1994, he won the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to the industry.  

Dilip Kumar was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1991 for his outstanding contribution to Indian Cinema. He was also awarded Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1994 and Padma Vibhushan in 2015. 

 

Kumar died at Hinduja Hospital, Mumbai, on 7 July 2021 at 7:30 am.
