Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu opened India’s account at the Tokyo Olympics as she won the silver medal in the women's 49kg category. The 26-year-old from Imphal lifted a total of 202 kg to appear second behind China’s Hou Zhihui, who won the gold at 210 kg. Chanu’s silver made her the second Indian weightlifter, since Karnam Malleswari in 2000, to win a medal at the Olympics.

Businessman Raj Kundra, husband of actor Shilpa Shetty has been arrested by the Mumbai Police in connection with a pornographic film case. The Mumbai Police said they arrested Mr Kundra on Monday "as he appears to be the key conspirator of this". 

"There was a case registered with the Crime Branch Mumbai in Feb 2021 about creation of pornographic films and publishing them through some Apps. We've arrested Mr Raj Kundra in this case on 19/7/21 as he appears to be the key conspirator of this. We have sufficient evidences regarding this," the Mumbai Police Commissioner said in a statement.

The State Law Commission has received over 8,500 feedbacks on the draft law on Population Control, with some criticising, some applauding, and others offering recommendations to make the law more effective. On July 9, this year, the Commission posted the draft Uttar Pradesh Population Control, Stabilisation, and Welfare Bill, 2021, on its website, urging the public for feedback on the proposed law within 10 days (until July 19).

The CISCE released results for classes 10 and 12, with both girls and boys in class 10 obtaining the same pass percentage. Girls outscored boys by 0.2 percent in the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) class 12 results. The outcomes were generated in accordance with the board's alternate assessment policy. In class 10, girls and boys have achieved a pass percentage of 99.98 per cent. In class 12, the pass percentage of girls is 99.86 per cent while that of boys is 99.66 per cent.

In connection with the gun licence case, the CBI searched 40 sites on Saturday, including the residence of Jammu and Kashmir IAS officer Shahid Iqbal Choudhary in Srinagar. The agency has not yet provided specifics regarding these raids, but has stated that the action was conducted as part of a complaint filed in 2019. It is alleged that between 2012 and 2016, the commissioners of several districts in Jammu and Kashmir issued unlawful and fraudulent weapons permits in order to make money. Choudhary is an IAS officer from the 2009 batch who is now serving as Administrative Secretary, Department of Tribal Affairs, Jammu & Kashmir.
